Miao Yang
Charleston, South Carolina

University of Pennsylvania, Class of 2013

At the age of 12, Miao (Jessica) Yang immigrated with her family toCharleston, South Carolina. Although she was immediately challengedwith the language barrier and the cultural clash, she aimed forimprovements in both the academics and the arts. For a long time, shecould not claim to have been successful; however, Jessica faced eachobstacle with simply more effort to overcome them. With the support ofa loving family, Jessica's perspectives have grown and matured. Shefound her passion in contributing to her community and in painting.Having majored in visual arts at an art school, Jessica decided tocontinue immersing herself in visual arts in the future. She believesthat "painting is the language which cannot be replaced by anotherlanguage" (Spencer Tunick). Going to the University of Pennsylvania inPhiladelphia, a city with a rich amalgam of culture and arts, will bethe best experience for her. In the future, one of her main goals is tobe able to help her family financially after graduating college, sinceher family is what has shaped her to become the person that she is today
