In our elementary school, as a class, we had to perform a Mao’s Red Guard Play on important holidays (example: Oct.1). The play was simple, like a young Red Guard, proclaim and proud of his/her peasantry heritage, waving Mao’s red pamphlet. This was followed by a brief, but victorious confrontation with the farm landlords. Then our commitment to redness was shown and assured. It also reminded the audience, that we were the happy generation, never went through any starvation, and were grown up in the sugar bowl. The future was bright, and the future belonged to us, we were full of optimism…
Problem: On several occasions, the school teachers were unable to find young boys to go on stage, and perform the play. The boys were either too shy, or have no artistic talents to carry out the play with passion.
Solution: 黄志云, our dear classmate, come to the rescue, to fill the role.
I was at the audience, when it happened. At the opening play, 黄志云, dressed as a young male Red Guard, rushed onto the stage, carry out the grand play opening, as a young male Red Guard. I/We were immensely amused. We all immediately recognized 黄志云, in a male Red Guard’s clothing (I told you 黄志云 was very feminine, others recognized it too.). The audiences laughed loudly first. 黄志云 knew her audience. She gave a warm on-stage smile to the audience as an opening feedback, acknowledging the male role she was playing. Then she gave her 110% of her effort to the rest of the play, as a male Red Guard. After a short while, the laughs subsided, and the audience cherished the male Red Guard whom 黄志云 was playing…She was one of us. Some young boys began to have a crush on her afterwards…
Yes, 黄志云 was that good. Above all, she was dedicated to her passion, her talents, and totally oblivious of what others may think of her…To these days, I still think highly of her, her fine attributes, so different from the rest of us… Class78 is glad to have a classmate like 黄志云!!!
