Denali National Park and Preserve

White Mountain National Forest

The White Mountain National Forest quarter is the 16th design in the America the Beautiful Quarters Program.  White Mountain National Forest is located mostly in New Hampshire, the rest in Maine.  The area was first established as a national forest on May 16, 1918.

Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial

The Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial quarter is the 17th design in the America the Beautiful Quarters Program.  The memorial became a national site on March 3, 1919.

This memorial has two purposes: to honor those who fought in the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812 and to celebrate the long-lasting peace among Britain, Canada, and the United States.  Five miles from the memorial lies the border between Canada and the United States, the longest undefended border in the world.

The memorial is a Doric column that rises over Lake Erie in Ohio.  The name "Perry" refers to Master Commandant Oliver Hazard Perry, who led the Americans in the battle.  Six naval officers (three American and three British), who were slain during the battle, are buried under the rotunda of the memorial.

Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine

The Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine quarter is 19th in the America the Beautiful Quarters Program.  Fort McHenry was first established as a national site on March 3, 1925.

After British forces burned buildings in Washington, D.C., they moved on to attack Baltimore.  Francis Scott Key, a poet-lawyer on a truce ship near the fort, saw the fort being bombarded all night long. The next morning, when he saw that his country's flag was still flying over the fort, he was moved to pen the words to "The Star-Spangled Banner."

Fort McHenry was named for James McHenry, our Nation's second Secretary of War.  The coin's design represents the fort during its famous annual "Defenders Day" celebration.  The fireworks symbolize "the rocket's red glare," linking the fort to its historic past and to our national anthem.

The Mount Rushmore National Memorial quarter is quarter number 20 of 56 in the America the Beautiful Quarters Program.  The memorial was first established as a national site on March 3, 1925.

Since the time it was carved, Mount Rushmore has become more and more famous as a symbol of America, freedom, and hope for people all over the world.  The sculpture, located in the scenic Black Hills of South Dakota, features the heads of former Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln.

The coin's image of workmen on the mountain was inspired by photos taken as the final details were added to Thomas Jefferson's face in the 1930s.  Although Mount Rushmore was featured on three commemorative coins in 1991 and on the South Dakota quarter in 2006 under the 50 State Quarters倀爀漀最爀愀洀, this new design is distinctly different.  Its view of the monument as a work in progress offers an educational glimpse of how Mount Rushmore was sculpted.
