虽然读书时在个人层面上我从未跟校长有过任何互动,
我永远感激他为我在30年前做的一件事！
当初我来到美国时，我在国内只读过3年大学，还没有毕业。
因此，我得先读完本科,才能进研究院。
我当时向美国学校（加州大学圣地亚哥分校) 提交了我国内的大学成绩单，托福分数，1978年全国高考成绩卡，
以及1978年的大学录取通知书。
但我缺少一个必需的文件---高中毕业证。
我那时身上虽然有步中的红皮高中毕业证，但它是中文版。
我把它翻译成英文，打好字后，寄回家，
并附带一封给校长的信。
那时父亲在水步墟工作. 他骑单车到步中, 拜访雷校长。
校长十分热情，询问我在美国求学的情况
后，二话不说, 就在英文版本的高中毕业证上签名, 盖章。
步中的红色印章和校长的签字，让我顺利地进入加州大学圣地亚哥分校电机电脑系。
接下来的就是历史了。
人们可能认为这事很简单，举手之劳, 也他校长工作的一部分。
但是，所有我们这些在中国大陆从1960年到1980年
出生长大的人，
都深知当时办个文件或
弄个批条有多难.
要在大队盖个章, 去公社办个旅行证出省城，或到公安局申请个护照,
任何一个有四两权力的人都有可能给你出难题，用荒谬的理由卡你，拒绝您的请求。
他们有时会让你乞求他们，跑来跑去, 甚至
要送礼, 才给你盖个章。
但是，我们校长不是那样的人。
他只
在乎把事做好。干干脆脆.
他甚至连表示他帮了我一个大忙也没有。
这个事反映他的为人。
正人！
君子！

Though I never had an opportunity to interact with our principal on a personal level while in school,
I have always been and will forever be grateful to him for the very one thing he did for me 30 years ago!
When I came to the US in the early 1980's, I had only 3 years of college education from China
and had not graduated yet. So I had to enter college here as an undergraduate student to
complete my bachelor degree before enrolling in graduate school.
I presented the school (UC San Diego) my college transcript from China, TOFEL score,
the 1978 National College Entry Exam score card, as well as my1978 college acceptance notice.
But one required document was missing --- the high school graduation certificate.
I had this red-covered high school diploma with me but it was in Chinese.
I translated it into English, typed it up, and mailed it home, along with a personal letter to Principal Lei.
My dad was at the time working in the town of the commune.
He biked to the school and visited the school office.
Principal Lei warmly welcomed him, asked about my schooling in the US, signed English version
of my high school diploma, and stamped it with the school seal in red ink.
With the red school seal and signature of the school principal,
I was accepted into the Electrical Engineering & Computer Science department by UC San Diego.
And the rest is history.
What Principal Lei did for me might look simple and people may think that was part of his job.
But all those of us who grew up in mainland China from 1960's to 1980's
know too well to forget how difficult back then it was to get any paperwork or permit done through
any government agency, be it to get a signature from the production unit,
to obtain a travel permit to Guangzhou from the commune,
or to apply for a passport to go overseas from the public security department.
Anyone with an ounce of authority would give you a hard time and had every excuse his
or her grandma or uncle could come up with to reject your request.
They would sometimes make you go there to beg them numerous times
before they relented and granted you what was rightfully yours.
But our principal was not one of those people.
He just did it for me. No question asked.
He did not even show that he was doing me a favor.
This simple act speaks well of the man he was.
An man of integrity!
A gentleman!
